Privacy Policy
Plain language. No dark patterns. We collect the minimum needed to grade your work and run a small subscription business.
The short version
- We store your email, name, and — for Student / Pro subscribers — your grading history.
- Submitted text is sent to Groq for grading. Free-tier text is discarded after grading; paying subscribers' submitted text is stored alongside the saved grade so you can read it back.
- Saved grades store the result, AI feedback, your subject + weight, the actual grade you enter, and (for paid plans) the original submitted text — capped at 8,000 characters per entry.
- Payments run through Stripe. We never see your card number.
- We don't sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers, and we don't train AI models on your work. Ever.
- You can delete any saved grade — or your whole account — at any time.
01 Who we are
GradeCheck is an independent service that provides AI-assisted grade estimates on student work — essays, short answers, test responses. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what we do with it. "We", "us", and "GradeCheck" refer to the operator of this service.
02 Information we collect
Account data. When you sign up, we collect your email address, an optional display name, and a hash of your password (never the password itself). We send a six-digit verification code to confirm you control the email.
Submitted work (free tier). The text you paste into the grader, plus the subject, strictness setting, and any optional rubric. For anonymous and free-plan users we process, grade, and discard the text — nothing about it is kept after the grade is returned.
Saved grade records (Student & Pro only). When a paying subscriber saves a grade to their dashboard, we store the resulting record on our servers so it follows you across devices. Each record contains: the title you gave the entry, the subject you assigned it to, the AI-estimated score and letter grade, the short summary + feedback the AI produced, the weight you set, the timestamp, the actual grade you enter (if any), and the original submitted text (capped at 8,000 characters per entry) so you can re-read your work and the feedback together inside the dashboard. The text is stored only on our database and is never re-sent for training or analysis without your action.
AI insight cache. If you tap "Generate" on the Smart Insight card, we may cache the short summary that comes back so it survives a refresh. Only your aggregated subject + score data is sent to generate it — never the submitted text or AI feedback bodies.
Usage metadata. A weekly counter (per email for logged-in users, per IP for anonymous users) so we can enforce plan limits. We do not log full request history.
Payment data. If you upgrade, Stripe handles the transaction. We receive only the subscription status, plan tier, and a customer ID — never your card number, CVC, or full billing address.
03 How your submitted text is used
When you tap Grade my work, the text is sent to Groq — our AI inference provider — to generate the grade and feedback. Groq processes the request and returns a response. For anonymous and free-plan users, we discard the text immediately after the grade comes back. For Student and Pro subscribers who save the grade, the text is stored alongside the record on our database (see section 02) so you can revisit it inside the dashboard.
Groq's data handling is governed by their own privacy policy; please review it if you're submitting sensitive work.
We do not train AI models on your work. Your text passes through Groq's inference API and is never used to fine-tune any model owned or operated by us.
Do not paste confidential information. AI inference providers may log requests for safety and abuse detection. Treat the grader like any third-party AI tool.
04 Cookies and local storage
We don't set tracking cookies and we don't embed third-party analytics. Your session, dashboard cache, and UI preferences live in your browser's localStorage. For paying subscribers, saved grades and the AI insight summary are also mirrored to our database so they follow you across browsers and devices.
Stripe sets its own functional cookies on its checkout and billing-portal pages — these are required for payments and fraud prevention. They're scoped to Stripe's domains and governed by their privacy policy.
05 Third parties
- Groq — AI inference for grading.
- Stripe — payment processing and subscription billing.
- Resend — transactional email (verification codes only).
- Vercel — hosting and serverless infrastructure.
Each provider operates under its own privacy policy. We share only the minimum data needed for the service to function.
06 Your rights
You can request a copy of your data, correct it, or delete your account entirely. Deletion removes your account record, saved grades, AI insight cache, and verification state. You can also delete any individual saved grade from the dashboard without closing your account. Stripe retains payment records as required by tax and accounting law.
If you're in the EU, UK, or California, you have additional rights under GDPR / UK GDPR / CCPA including the right to object to processing and to lodge a complaint with your local data authority.
07 Data retention
Account data is kept while your account is active. Saved grades are capped at the most recent 500 per account and are kept until you delete them or close the account. The Smart Insight cache holds only the last generated summary. Verification codes auto-expire after 10 minutes. Usage counters auto-expire after 14 days.
08 Children
GradeCheck is intended for students aged 13 and over. If you're under 13, please don't create an account. If you believe a child under 13 has signed up, contact us and we will delete the account.
09 Changes to this policy
We'll update the "Last updated" date above when this policy changes. Material changes will be announced via email to active accounts at least 14 days before they take effect.
